Wildfires continue to burn across southern France, affecting an area of more than 6 000 ha, and resulting in evacuations, as reported by the Operational Centre for Inter-ministerial Crisis Management (COGIC).
In Gironde department (Nouvelle-Aquitaine region, south-western France), there are two active wildfires: Teste-de-Buch and Landiras, which have burned an area of 3 000 ha and 4 100 ha, respectively. Due to the Teste-de-Buch wildfire, 10 000 people in Cazaux town had to be preventively evacuated. In Bouches-du-Rhône department (Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region, southern France), a wildfire in Tarascon town has burned more than 1 300 ha.
A large number of departmental, extra-departmental and extra-zonal land resources were engaged: 940 firefighters in Tarascon, 548 in Landiras and 575 in La Teste-de-Buch. Unfavourable weather conditions are hindering firefighting operations, and as of 15 July, the wildfires are still not under control.
On 14 July, France activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism, to request the provision of aerial assets from the UCPM Member and Participating states.
According to the European Forest Fire Information System (JRC EFFIS), on 15-16 July, the fire danger forecast will be extreme to very extreme danger over coastal southern France and very high danger over south-western France.
