The State Emergency Service in Ukraine has reported that several rivers have broken their banks, causing widespread flooding in eight regions of the country. The agency stated that numerous rivers, including the Dnipro, Desna, Seym, Sozh, Pripyat and Horyn rivers, have experienced a seasonal rise in water levels.
As of 16 April, the flooding had affected nearly 1,000 households across the regions of Volyn, Dnipropetrovsk, Kyiv, Rivne, Poltava, Cherkasy, Chernihiv and Zhytomyr. The State Emergency Service has dispatched teams to the affected areas, where they have been pumping water from hundreds of houses and yards and helping residents to evacuate flooded homes.
The worst affected area is reportedly Chernihiv Oblast, where 474 households have been impacted by overflows from several rivers. The flooding has disrupted transport connections, leaving 29 settlements in Novgorod-Siverskyi, Koryukivskyi, Nizhynskyi and Chernihivskyi districts isolated. Over 200 people have been evacuated from flooded homes by the State Emergency Service.
In addition to the impact on residents, wide areas of agricultural land have also been affected by the flooding. For example, 7,198 hectares of land in Kamin-Kashirskyi and Kovelskyi in Volyn Oblast and 3,065 hectares in Rivne region have been flooded.
The State Emergency Service has urged residents in affected areas to remain vigilant and follow safety advice. The agency is continuing to monitor the situation and provide assistance where necessary.
