16th July 2023 Georgia Flood

jh
Body

A series of unexpected storms, heavy rainfall, and flash floods have severely impacted 15 municipalities in six regions of Georgia by 16th July 2023. The affected areas include both rural and urban settlements, spanning from seaside urban areas to high mountainous rural regions.

In rural areas, the agricultural sector suffered significant damage, with floods destroying crops and livestock. Residential houses were also heavily affected, causing damage to roofs and ground floors, where families store essential items. Media footage showed floods reaching up to one meter high in some municipalities, submerging furniture and household electronics.

Urban areas faced disruptions in transportation and mobility as central streets and ground floors of buildings were flooded. Roads, bridges, and power transmission towers were destroyed, leaving several municipalities without gas and electricity for more than a day. The Kutaisi International Airport was also affected, disrupting its operations.

Georgia's socio-economic situation worsens the impact, with a significant portion of rural residents already living below the poverty line. Recovery efforts will require comprehensive measures to address immediate needs, provide shelter, clean water, food, and medical assistance.

The rehabilitation process will focus on repairing damaged infrastructure and supporting the agricultural sector. Long-term efforts will assist affected households in rebuilding their livelihoods, including financial and agricultural assistance.

The government of Georgia has set up a special commission to assess the damage, and various authorities and humanitarian organizations are actively involved in recovery efforts.

The Georgian Red Cross Society (GRCS) plans to expand its ongoing operation to provide Cash and Voucher Assistance (CVA) to the most vulnerable households in the newly damaged regions, reaching a total of 2,800 households in both regions affected by the flash floods in June and July 2023. Collaborative efforts involving the government, humanitarian organizations, and local communities are essential to ensure the affected areas can recover and rebuild after this devastating disaster.
