As of August 19th, the devastating wildfires that have been raging across northern Tenerife Island since August 15th persist in their aggressive expansion, resulting in the evacuation of over 4,500 individuals, with a definite count still elusive. The wildfire crisis shows no signs of abating, and evacuations remain ongoing.
Media reports indicate that the conflagration has impacted eleven municipalities on the island. On August 18th and 19th, the fires reached the municipalities of Gúimar and Los Realejos, compounding the already affected areas which include Arafo, Candelaria, Tacoronte, La Orotava, El Rosario, Santa Ursula, La Victoria, La Matanza, and El Sauzal. Though the imposition of confinement measures has been lifted, no locations are currently under such restrictions.
According to the Government of the Canary Islands, the affected region encompassed nearly 5,000 hectares as of August 18th, delineated by a perimeter exceeding 50 kilometers. However, by August 19th, the European Forest Fire Information System (EFFIS) estimates that the scorched area has ballooned to 11,015 hectares.
The wildfire remains uncontained, prompting the deployment of 19 aircraft on the current day to combat the inferno. In response to the disaster, the Copernicus Emergency Management Service swiftly activated rapid mapping mode (EMSR685) on August 16th, aimed at assessing the extent of damage inflicted on the affected area. As of now, a single delineation map has been generated as part of these efforts.
