Situation
Belgium and Spain activated the EU Civil Protection Mechanism as major wildfires placed national firefighting resources under pressure. In Belgium's Hautes Fagnes, more than 3,000 hectares had burned by 17 August 2026. Two rescEU aircraft from Sweden and helicopters from the Netherlands, Norway and Germany supported Belgian responders. In Spain, close to 16,000 hectares burned in Aragón, where France deployed 104 ground firefighters and 36 vehicles. Copernicus emergency satellite mapping was also active for wildfire operations across Belgium, Spain and several other European countries. The European Commission reported that the area burned across Europe by the end of July was already 2.5 times the usual level for that point in the season.
