Situation
The World Health Organization reported the containment of an Andes hantavirus outbreak linked to the Netherlands-flagged cruise ship M/V Hondius. By 2 July 2026, 13 cases had been notified: 12 laboratory-confirmed and one probable. Three people died, giving a reported case fatality ratio of 23 per cent. All cases involved people who had travelled aboard the vessel. Ten patients were admitted to hospital; eight recovered and were discharged, while two remained under treatment at the reporting date. Authorities traced contacts across 33 countries and overseas territories. A total of 317 high-risk contacts completed quarantine and monitoring, while about 336 low-risk contacts completed self-monitoring. No additional secondary cases were detected during the completed 42-day follow-up period, leading WHO to conclude that transmission had been interrupted and the outbreak no longer posed a public-health risk. WHO nevertheless advised continued surveillance, research and preparedness because Andes virus remains endemic in parts of South America.
