Situation

Armed bandit attacks, village raids and kidnappings for ransom are driving a worsening humanitarian crisis across north-western and north-central Nigeria. BBC reporting published on 26 August documented survivors from Zamfara who fled killings, arson and abductions, while a separate attack on four villages in Niger State left more than 40 people reported dead and an unverified local estimate of as many as 500 people abducted. In Zamfara, a survivor reported that about 70 people, including children, were killed in Bia Buki in June. UNICEF estimates that armed banditry and communal violence have displaced nearly 1.4 million people across north-west Nigeria, with about 80 per cent living in host communities. Violence has disrupted farming, markets, schools, healthcare and access to food. Humanitarian responders are providing displacement tracking, child protection, mobile healthcare, nutrition, food assistance and emergency coordination, but insecurity continues to restrict access.
