Situation

Sudan remains one of the world's gravest humanitarian emergencies as conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and Rapid Support Forces enters a fourth year. Nearly 13 million people have been forced from their homes, including more than 3.2 million who fled to neighbouring countries. UNHCR's June data records 8,805,506 internally displaced people in Sudan. Food insecurity is worsening: FAO and WFP estimated that 19.5 million people faced Crisis-level hunger or worse through May 2026, including 5 million in Emergency, while 200,000 people were projected to face Catastrophe conditions across 15 areas between June and September. Famine risk persists across parts of Darfur and Kordofan. WFP warns that El Obeid is becoming a new centre of displacement and hunger, with camps beyond capacity and food, fuel and water scarce. Conflict blocked food assistance for an estimated 200,000 people in June, while funding shortages threaten food and nutrition supplies. Children face acute risks, with 825,000 children under five expected to suffer severe acute malnutrition during 2026. Figures remain dynamic and should be read with their reference dates.

IOM DTM’s separate Snapshot 9, covering 1–26 August 2026, records 8,583,274 internally displaced people across 185 localities in all 18 states and 5,145,165 returnees across 77 localities in nine states. The earlier UNHCR figure of 8,805,506 internally displaced people is retained with its 30 June 2026 reference date; the two agencies’ series are not combined or treated as a direct reconciliation.

A separate UNHCR Egypt destination snapshot dated 1 October 2026 says the Government of Egypt reported 1.5 million Sudanese people and 67,067 third-country nationals had fled to Egypt since April 2023. UNHCR recorded 1,082,209 newly arrived people provided with registration appointments, 885,114 newly arrived people registered, including 354,726 households, and 8,056 newly arrived people registered during September 2026. These Egypt arrival and registration figures are retained as a destination-country series and are not added to Sudan’s internal-displacement or wider regional cross-border totals.
