Situation

Two people were killed and one woman was seriously injured when a rain-triggered landslide buried a temporary farm shed at Kottakamboor in Vattavada, Idukki district, Kerala, on 20 September 2026. Balakrishnan and his sister Chinnu died; Balakrishnan’s wife Mariyamma was rescued and admitted to hospital.

The three had been working on a garlic farm and moved into the shed as heavy rain intensified. Residents manually removed mud and debris because difficult terrain initially restricted machinery access. Reporting attributed the slope failure to torrential rain, while officials also investigated whether a fallen electric pole contributed to the deaths. This record therefore retains the two confirmed deaths without asserting a final medical mechanism. No verified displacement or wider housing-damage denominator was published, so none is inferred. The incident is kept separate from the Kottayam district landslips and the Kottapuzha/Nilambur flash flood.
