Situation
Severe storms that crossed Rio Grande do Sul between 20 and 21 September 2026 caused intense rain, destructive winds, hail, flash flooding and landslides across the Brazilian state. The final Civil Defence balance issued on 24 September records six deaths, six injured people and 642,512 people affected. It also records 838 people in public shelters and 4,616 people displaced from their homes; those two categories are preserved separately rather than combined.
An earlier official state-government snapshot at 11:00 on 22 September recorded four deaths, three injured people, one person missing, 577,230 people affected, 657 people in shelters and 3,178 displaced from their homes across 151 municipalities. The later balance supersedes those headline figures while the earlier observation remains in the evidence history. A separate meteorological episode beginning on 25 September is outside this record and is not merged into these totals.
WorldsAid verification
A WorldsAid editor reviewed this record against 3 attributed sources, cleaned feed formatting and checked the crisis, place and reporting date. 10 human-impact figures were separated from the narrative and dated where the source allowed. Earlier observations remain in the evidence history instead of being silently overwritten.
