Budhi Gandaki flash flood destroys

A destructive flash flood swept through the Budhi Gandaki river corridor in Nepal’s Gorkha district early on 11 October 2026 after a landslide appears to have temporarily blocked the river near Chumchet and the natural dam failed. Nepal’s National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority (NDRRMA) ordered evacuations and warned people downstream to move to safer ground. Preliminary reporting said five people were missing. The flood damaged or destroyed four bridges, swept away about three dozen houses and damaged a hydropower construction site, according to reporting based on Nepalese authorities. The Nepal Army said 49 stranded people had been rescued by Sunday afternoon using helicopters and ground teams. Power and communication infrastructure was also damaged along the river. Assessments remained under way, so these figures are preliminary and may change. The United Nations in Nepal said it was supporting the government-led response. FAO deployed a LiDAR drone, OCHA was coordinating satellite-image support, and WFP made trucks and high-energy biscuits available for relief deliveries. ICIMOD said the landslide-dam breach explanation was preliminary and noted that the valley had experienced another flood-generating episode in 2024. Nepal flash flood sweeps away

A flash flood on the Budhi Gandaki River swept away homes and bridges in Nepal’s Gorkha district on 11 October 2026. The Associated Press reported at least five people missing and 49 rescued by the Nepal Army. Those preliminary rescue and missing-person reports do not establish an affected-population total. Nepal’s Centre of Hydrology and Water Resources Research confirmed that a bridge carrying the river-monitoring station was washed away, interrupting further measurements. Its 11 October bulletin said the initial evidence suggested a landslide had blocked the river before the blockage broke, but the cause was still under technical investigation. It warned residents to remain in safe places, avoid bridges and at-risk roads, and follow local authorities even if the river appeared to recede. Damage estimates remain provisional and differ between reports. Reuters, citing the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority, described about a dozen houses and two suspension bridges swept away, damage to a hydropower construction camp, and a highway bridge lost. AP separately reported about three dozen houses and four bridges damaged or destroyed. These accounts are retained separately; they are not added together or treated as a reconciled total. Hurricane Simon strengthens off Mexico

At 21:00 UTC on 10 October 2026, the National Hurricane Center (NHC) located Hurricane Simon near 17.6°N, 104.8°W, about 165 km south-southwest of Manzanillo, Mexico. Simon was moving north at 7 km/h, with maximum sustained winds of 240 km/h and minimum central pressure of 932 mb. It remained a Category 4 hurricane. Hurricane Warnings covered Punta San Telmo to El Roblito and Las Islas Marias; a Tropical Storm Watch covered the coast east of Punta San Telmo to Lazaro Cardenas. Simon was expected near or just inland of Mexico’s west-central coast Sunday. NHC forecast 250–510 mm of rain over parts of southwestern Mexico, with isolated totals up to 760 mm in Michoacan, Colima and Jalisco, and warned of life-threatening flooding, mudslides and dangerous storm surge near and east of landfall. Separately, GDACS episode 13 classified Simon Red and modelled an overall maximum wind of about 250 km/h with roughly 620,000 people exposed to Category 1-or-stronger winds. These are dated forecast-model outputs, not confirmed counts of people affected, displaced, injured or killed. They are not combined with NHC observations. The earlier episode-12 snapshot, which modelled about 940,000 people in the Category 1-or-stronger wind footprint at 09:00 UTC, remains dated history. Older episode-6 forecast models remain dated evidence: HWRF showed 162 km/h winds, storm surge up to 2.1 m and rainfall up to 1,149 mm; GFS showed 151 km/h winds, surge up to 1.7 m and rainfall up to 625 mm; ECMWF showed 162 km/h winds, surge up to 1.6 m and rainfall up to 449 mm. These are separate from current NHC observations and the later GDACS exposure snapshots. No confirmed casualty, displacement, affected-population, infrastructure-loss or procurement total is inferred.

Post-tropical Isaias brings flash-flood risk

Post-tropical Cyclone Isaias was inland over central Alabama at 21:00 UTC on 10 October 2026, about 10 km west of Birmingham. The Weather Prediction Center (WPC) reported maximum sustained winds of 45 km/h and minimum central pressure of 1007 mb. Isaias was moving north-northeast at 24 km/h. Flood watches remained in effect for portions of the Southeast and Southern Appalachians, with a high-wind warning for portions of the Southern Appalachians and a wind advisory for portions of the Mid-South and Southern Appalachians. WPC said heavy rainfall would continue across the Southeast and Southern Appalachians, with considerable flash and urban flooding possible and landslides possible in the Southern Appalachians. Strong wind gusts, scattered power outages and downed trees and power lines remained a forecast risk; a couple of tornadoes were possible in eastern Georgia and the Carolinas. These are forecast hazards, not confirmed impact totals. WPC was continuing advisories after the National Hurricane Center issued its final advisory. People in affected areas should follow local weather and emergency-management guidance.
