Most of Syria Affected By Cholera

Body

The cholera outbreak has now spread over most of Syria, affecting 13 of the 14 governorates of the country. More than 13,000 suspected cases have been reported, including 60 deaths. With limited testing capacities, and a largely dysfunctional health system, the number of cases remains difficult to ascertain and is estimated to be significantly higher.

World Health Organisation (WHO) issued a Syria AWD/Cholera Response Plan on 29 September for USD 35.2 million.

DG ECHO is responding within the framework of its ongoing programme, has mobilised an additional EUR 500,000, and is providing EUR 200,000 for the Disaster Relief Emergency Fund (DREF) of the International Federation of Red Cross (IFRC).

On 10 October, the Lebanese Ministry of Public Health reported 14 cholera cases in Akkar Governorate, which shares a border with Syria, with another 41 cases under investigation.
