On 16 March, a heavy rainstorm hit Northern Syria, causing extensive damage to infrastructure, agricultural land, and displacement camps. The floods resulted in the loss of livelihoods and the loss of human lives, with at least eight fatalities reported in Al Hasakah, Ar-Raqqa and Kobane. The affected areas include Northeast and Northwest Syria, where several IDP sites have been severely impacted.
Northeast Syria
The heavy rainstorms in Northeast Syria caused significant damage to bridges, roads, and agricultural land. The floods also affected the displacement camps in the region, worsening the already difficult living conditions of the IDPs. The Abu Khashab camp, which hosts more than 10,000 IDPs, suffered severe damages, with mud accumulation on the roads and water entering the tents. The floods damaged tents, food supplies, and other essential items, leaving the IDPs in dire need of assistance.
Northwest Syria
In Northwest Syria, the rainstorms caused damages to several IDP sites, with 375 tents completely destroyed and 531 tents partially damaged. One injury was reported due to the floods. Urgent assistance is required, including tents, non-food items (NFIs), plastic sheeting, and food parcels, to support the affected IDPs.
Overall, the heavy rainstorms and floods have caused significant damage to Northern Syria, affecting the livelihoods and safety of IDPs and residents in the region. Immediate assistance is required to mitigate the impact of the floods and support the affected communities.
