Between October 23 and 25, 2023, the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Yemen's Displacement Tracking Matrix (DTM) recorded a total of 3,689 households, comprising 22,134 individuals, who were forced to evacuate their homes due to the devastating effects of Cyclone Tej. The cyclone made landfall in the Al Maharah governorate on October 22, wreaking havoc across the region.
The majority of displaced individuals sought refuge within specific governorates and districts, as follows:
- Al Maharah Governorate (3,384 households):
- Haswin District (1,815 households)
- Al Ghaydhah District (1,123 households)
- Al Masilah District (210 households)
Remarkably, all displacements within the Al Maharah governorate were internal, as residents fled their homes to escape the cyclone's devastating impact.
- Hadramawt Governorate (305 households):
- Ar Raydah wa Qussayar District (305 households)
Similar to Al Maharah, all displacements in Hadramawt were also internal. Cyclone Tej's heavy rains and fierce winds resulted in widespread flooding and significant damage to critical infrastructure.
The aftermath of Cyclone Tej has prompted urgent humanitarian efforts to provide assistance and support to those affected by the disaster, as Yemen continues to grapple with the challenges posed by natural disasters and ongoing conflicts.
